Yes! Your chat history in Duck.ai is private, and cannot be accessed by DuckDuckGo or AI chat model providers. Duck.ai offers multiple ways to securely save your chat history. You can save your conversations locally on your device, or on a secure DuckDuckGo server by enabling Sync & Backup.
Chat History
By default, Duck.ai will save your chats locally on your device so you can refer to them later. These chats will appear in the sidebar menu in Duck.ai. You can disable chat history at any time in Duck.ai settings.
In the DuckDuckGo browser on Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android, your Duck.ai chats and settings are stored locally on your device. This means they are stored securely outside of the browser web storage, and they won’t appear in browser developer tools, but they are saved locally and private to you.
Because chats are stored locally on your device, chat retention in non-DuckDuckGo browsers may vary based on the specific browser or app settings. For example, some browsers retain them for extended periods or indefinitely, unless you explicitly clear your browser data. Others, such as Safari, automatically delete your chat history if you go more than 7 days without visiting duck.ai.
Deleting Chat History
When using Duck.ai in the DuckDuckGo browser, deleting your browser data with the Fire Button will not delete Duck.ai chats by default. Instead, you can use the Fire Button within Duck.ai to delete all chats at once.
- Delete All Chat History: Tap the Fire Button icon at the top of the chats list and choose “Delete Chats".
- Delete Multiple Chats: Tap the Fire Button icon at the top of the chats list, then choose “Selected Chats” to reveal the multi-select option for chat deletion. Select the chats you want to delete, and tap the red Fire Button icon at the bottom of the screen to confirm deletion.
- Delete Individual Chats: Either tap the Fire Button icon beside the chat you want to delete or open the ⋮ menu beside the chat you want to delete and select “Delete Chat".
- Delete Pinned Chats: Pinned chats won't be deleted when you use the Fire Button in Duck.ai. You can unpin them or delete pinned chats individually via the ⋮ menu.
Sync & Backup
Sync & Backup is a free, optional feature that allows you to save up to 1000 your conversations privately on a secure DuckDuckGo server, and access them with end-to-end encryption from the DuckDuckGo browser. With Sync & Backup, the decryption keys are only stored on your devices, so only you can decrypt this information. This means DuckDuckGo never has access to your decryption key and cannot read your chats. You can enable this feature in the DuckDuckGo browser under Settings > Sync & Backup, or in Duck.ai settings. Chat history must be enabled before you can enable Sync & Backup.
Connecting multiple devices to Sync & Backup will merge any Duck.ai chat histories already stored locally on those devices, and keep them in sync. You can connect any device with the DuckDuckGo browser installed to Sync & Backup by going to Settings > Sync & Backup, and selecting Sync With Another Device.
